Train scenario

Thomas is the Retail Manager for a major train operator, and is in charge of the operations for the onboard shop and snack trolleys. The PINPOSTM TeamPad (PINPOS TeamPad) solution is used for retail sales; the devices stay onboard the train and communicate with back office systems via Wi-Fi or GPRS via satellite.

Today, Thomas is monitoring the 11:15am train from London to Cardiff. An international rugby match kicks off at the Millennium Stadium at 5pm, and Thomas expects a train full of rugby supporters; in anticipation additional cans of beer are loaded into the onboard shop and the snack trolleys. This train has 15 carriages, 1 onboard shop and 2 snack trolleys.

10:00am In the back office Thomas receives an urgent phone call: one of the trolleys has just been knocked over and is unusable.
10:01am Thomas updates the stock system and sends this stock update, via GPRS or Wi-Fi, to all of the PINPOS TeamPads that are already on the train.
11:15am The train leaves the station. Thomas remains in the back office in London.
11:30am A rugby team captain orders beer for his entire team and pays with a Chip and PIN card; the retail operator hands the PINPOS TeamPad to the rugby captain, enabling him make a secure payment by inserting his card and enter his PIN. His card never leaves him.

Each sales transaction is automatically:
  • Communicated from PINPOS TeamPads to the back office system via Wi-Fi, enabling Thomas to monitor stock progress.
  • Communicated between the PINPOS TeamPads onboard the train, giving the retail operators the total stock for each product available on the entire train, not just on their trolley or in their shop.
11:59am The beer supplies are rapidly disappearing! The missing trolley has made a real difference. Thomas can see that trolley A, serving the quiet carriages, still has a full stock of beer, whereas the other trolley B, is down to its last two cans.
12:01pm Thomas sends an instruction, via Wi-Fi, to the operators of trolley A and B which tells them swap carriages; this instruction appears in their PINPOS TeamPad. The operators duly swap carriages.
12:03pm Thomas arranges for more beer to be loaded into the train at Bristol, and emails his Team Leader on the train to confirm the additional stock numbers; an email appears, via Wi-Fi, on the Team Leader's PINPOS TeamPad.
01:25pm The train arrives at Cardiff. All sales transactions have been automatically sent to the back office sytems, enabling:
  • Immediate analysis of sales trends and performance
  • Quick and efficient stock takes, cashing up and discrepancy balances
  • Your business to respond in an agile timely manner
